I read this write-up: at this internet site http://information.yahoo.com/sites/trending-now/campaign-in opposition to-racially-insensitive-halloween-costumes-filmmaker-cash-154939433.html?ugccmtnav=v1%2Fcomments%2Fcontext%2F0f54bedd-61ae-3f78-a473-907abefa1538%2Fcomments%3Fcount%3D20%26sortBy%3DhighestRated%26isNext%3Dtrue%26offset%3D20%26pageNumber%3D1
Halloween is just close to the corner, and a team of Ohio University scholars would like to restrict what costumes people can wear. The team named Scholars Instructing Versus Racism in Modern society, aka or STARS, has introduced a marketing campaign against costumes that it thinks are racially insensitive. STARS created posters of folks dressed as racial stereotypes like Japanese geishas, a Latino sporting a poncho and sombrero, and an Arab terrorist sporting a fake bomb. The posters say, "We are a lifestyle, not a costume." Sarah Williams, the president of STARS, advised ABC Reports, "We want to highlight these offensive costumes simply because we've all noticed them." The team has without a doubt highlighted this concern, with images of the posters likely viral. The images, which Williams uploaded to her private Tumblr web page, have currently obtained much more than 17,000 notes (a staggering sum for a personal Tumblr weblog). Though many applaud the college students for the marketing campaign, some say they are getting overly vulnerable. What do you think about the costume campaign?
O.O what are your views on this topic? I feel these pupils are personally stupid.
"I'm Latino and I am offended by individuals dressing up as mexicans" Pfft Latino isn't really even a phucking race only retarded us residents believe this. Jesus Christ. IS THERE ANYTHING IN AMERICA TODAY THAT DOESNT HAVE TO INVOLVE RACE?
They are doing what they think is best and it is on a college campus. Let the students wrangle this out.
I think it makes sense.
I think the geisha and the dude in a sombrero isn’t so bad. But the middle eastern guy with a bomb strapped on him isn’t right…
I agree with them; I don’t understand people who feel the need to go as a certain ethnicity for Halloween. I was just telling someone else this, I know people who are thinking about going as Geishas or Native Americans, and though I never say anything, I see this as insensitive. Wouldn’t you be upset if someone knocked on your door dressed up as a “Guido” with a black blow-out haircut wig, and orange fake tan, calling himself Italian? I know I sure as hell would be!
I agree with you on the whole “Latino” thing (you know I HATE the misuse of that term), but it’s not really relevant here. On the subject, though, I think there should be more unity with the *whole* Latin World; Latin Europe AND Latin America. Not just one or the other. Because if you think about it, the only *true* “Latins” are Italians; Latin Europeans such as the French are descendants of Latinized Gauls, and many Latin Americans are descendants of Latinized Mayans, or Aztecs, etc.
ADD:
Yes, true. There is a good bit of ignorance surrounding such terms. It would be preferable if they referred to them as Latin Americans (which invokes ancestry in a certain region, not race or ethnicity).
ADD:
I know; I’ve seen one myself. Which is why I mentioned it. I’ve also seen Snooki wigs.
As an Italian-American, I DO find those offensive. They perpetrate nasty stereotypes that we’re all a bunch of dim witted, oversexed, over tanned, buffoons. And *I* know there is much more to our culture than that. That is NOT the culture I was raised in, and it is NOT the one I want representing us.
If you had any pride in your heritage, you’d be as offended as I am.
I think they’re being overly sensitive. I’m Scottish and if someone dresses up in a Kilt I honestly don’t care. And in Japan they don’t hesitate to cosplay characters that wear European costumes (and are supposed to be European) so I don’t see what the big deal is.
I agree with you about everything you stated.I’m Mexican I don’t get offended by what people wear.
Halloween is suppose to be FUUUUUUNNNN!!!!
It depends. If the person is TRYING to be offensve, then yes. (There was a guy in my elementary school who came EVERY YEAR dressed as a Nazi and people complained (once, maybe, but five years in a row???).
@W….It is funny that you talked about the jersey style Italian hair blowout with fake orange tan costume; because when I was at the halloween store the other day, they had that exact costume for sale! With the hair, oversized sunglasses, gold chain and all. I am Italian by heritage, but I am not offended by that. This is halloween. You dress up to have fun and to make fun. So have fun with it for crying out loud! Everyone should not be so thin skinned…when did we become a nation of wimpy, whiney cry babies?
i think it’s offensive.. don’t give 2 shyts what anyone says.. let’s call it what it is.. some ppl go overboard and dress up and act a fool to make it seem like that particular culture acts like that.. that’s when it gets offensive.. if i choose to dress up like cinderella should i paint my face white or should i leave it the color it is? this is a character not a culture.. there’s a difference.. ppl forget that and then use halloween as an excuse to make fun of other ppl’s culture.. it’s funny when they are making fun of other ppl’s culture til they make fun of your own..
and just to let you know i have a spanish friend.. she was born here.. she doesn’t call herself puerto-rican (sometimes), she calls herself a latina, but only when someone else that is puerto-rican (born in puerot-rico) challenges her to being a puerto-rican..
