Well, it's coming up on Halloween, the one (perhaps) time we adults can go all out and outfit ourselves in such a way as to satisfy our fantasies and maybe even wow our friends at parties. If you're undecided, or looking for something a little different, adult hippie costumes are hot this year! You may have noticed that department store buyers are now featuring retro-style remakes of the 'flower child' era in their clothing aisles. While some of the styles do simulate the fashions back in the day, you'll also see that synthetics and mass-produced items are prominent. 1.Long hair is a must, for both men and women. If you don't already have long hair, buy a wig or a good-looking fall (women). Adult hippie costumes do not succeed with short hair! 2.Headbands, bandannas and hats were de rigeur back in the day. You'll want to remember that a modern jogging headband won't do. Try a colorful silky scarf, folded diagonally to about a 2-3 inch width; then tie it around your forehead, with the knot either at the side or the back. Wide-brimmed hats, of leather, suede or straw were what really cool hippies wore. Go for natural colors. A single rose tucked into the brim also adds authenticity to your adult hippie costumes.

3.Now, what to wear, what to wear? Shirts first: Tie-dyed shirts (rainbow themes were quite popular), embroidered Mexican peasant blouses, band T-shirts (Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Stones ...) topped with long, loose fitting vests of denim, patchwork or suede, with fringe accents, as well as plain cotton loose fitting shirts (for guys) are all good for pulling off your authentic adult hippie costumes.

4.Now, for pants, skirts and dresses, should you so choose: Bell-bottom pants must not be too extreme on the bell part! Those bells that flapped around in the breeze belong to the later disco culture. Straight-leg denims and cords were worn by the cool crowd, all the better to show off your knee-high boots, with the pant legs tucked inside the boots. For the ladies, both mini skirts and long peasant skirts and dresses contribute to the authentic look.

5.Footwear is an important accessory for adult hippie costumes: knee-high boots may be most comfortable on a cool Halloween night, but sandals can also work with some appropriately radical socks or tights. The sandals should be plain and leather.

6.Other important accessories for proper adult hippie costumes include handmade jewelry (lots is fine: rings, earrings and necklaces, and it's better if it all doesn't match), embroidered, macrame or metal belts and of course, sunglasses. With sunglasses, understated is better. The huge ones didn't make the scene until later.

7.Now, for the crowning touch, your coat. Again, Halloween weather works in your favor. Leather or suede coats and jackets were the only kind of coat to wear if you were truly cool. A full-length coat is awesome.
