Greek Tunic – A Great Costume Idea for Halloween
There are a few months to go before Halloween comes around but it's never too early to start working on your costume. A Greek tunic is one of the easiest costumes to make for Halloween. For most people, it also looks very good. This can also be used for other events like Toga parties, Greek themed parties and other events that require costumes. It can also be used as props for a play or a school drama.
A Greek tunic can also be called a chiton. It was worn by both men and women in ancient times. The length can be adjusted according to your taste and you can also pick what colour you want it to be depending on what materials you have available.
You can easily buy a Greek tunic at the local costume store or online but it is much more fun to make the costume yourself. You can also earn extra bragging rights for a homemade costume while saving some money in the process. The materials can be bought cheap but you can also find the materials you need around your home such as old bed sheets, curtains or any other fabric.
First you need to find yourself some fabric. Make sure you have enough material and lay it out on the floor. You can use a measuring tape and scissors to cut excess fabric. Ideally, the length of the fabric should be as tall as you are.
The next step would be to fold the material in half. If you are using printed fabrics, make sure that the printed side is inside the fold. The width of your fabric should be as wide as your outstretched arms. Take some thread and a needle and stitch the left side of your fabric. Turn your fabric inside out so the printed side is now on the outside. Take out some safety pins and use them on the top part of your tunic. When securing the safety pins, make sure you leave some openings for your arms and head. You can now wear your tunic. Find a length of rope and use this as a belt to secure the tunic to your waist. Pull the tunic up a bit so the material is bloused over your belt. This will also serve as a way of adjusting the length of the tunic without having to do any cutting.
To save more, you can go to a fabric store to buy some cloth. While sheets may be readily available at your home, keep in mind that sheets can be quite expensive. Cloth found in fabric stores will always be cheaper than the cheapest sheet. You can also add some red fabric draped over your shoulder to transform your Greek tunic into a Roman tunic. This is a great way of recycling your costume without having people notice. This is especially convenient when you have to attend two costume parties in a row. A Greek tunic is perhaps one of the easiest and most cost-efficient Halloween costume to make.
